We all benefit from support, and this is especially true for mental health practitioners. Outcome focused consultation and supervision has been demonstrated to increase therapist adherence to models of care which improves outcomes for their clients.

My supervision, consultation, teaching, and training focus is generally geared towards people and programs delivering 20 to 40 session CBT for those with eating disorders and 10-session CBT-T for those with eating disorders who are not underweight.

While eating disorders are a common struggle for those accessing psychotherapy, many clinicians are reluctant to treat these concerns directly due to a lack of specialization. Positively, some of the best outcomes seen in this population were achieved by entry level clinicians and trainees who were well supervised. I am passionate about helping to increase therapist competence and confidence to treat those with eating disorders so that treatment is more accessible, timely, and effective for this underserved population.

For many clinicians, consultation is a highpoint of their week. It fosters ongoing learning, better outcomes, and increased workplace satisfaction. While implementing something new can be anxiety provoking, the excitement of helping people get well certainly outweighs the challenges.

Consultation

Educational

Let’s get off to a good start by taking stock. Are you looking to build up your knowledge base before starting to treat people with eating disorders? Are you already treating people with eating disorders and looking for guidance regarding how to start using CBT? Are you providing CBT for eating disorders and looking for a way to enhance your practice? All are great places to start! We will develop an education plan that meets the stage you are at before moving the the next stage.

Outcome Focus

After we establish that you have a good understanding of the manuals and theory, putting your knowledge into practice is the next step. Each week, we review each case to ensure that the people you are seeing are achieving symptom interruption and cognitive and emotional improvement. We investigate what may be getting in the way of change and strategize ways to address these barriers in your future sessions.

Therapist Focus

Learning and honing your skills and strategies to respond effectively to those you are working with is very important. Equally important is that we address any therapist “drift” that gets in the way of delievering the full treatment and therapist anxiety that contributes to omitting certain parts of the model. We are all vulnerable to this and regular consultaiton can be a very effective way of reducing this vulnerability
